The holiday search season is upon us…
And we each have our own version of what that entails. We envision that the holidays are a special time spent with family, cozy nights cuddled up by the fire, fun office holiday parties and the wonderment of freshly fallen snow. So, you need that recipe for pumpkin pie, or want to know the hottest toy for the kids in the family. Maybe the best holiday light display.
But for some of us, here’s what’s really on our minds—as evidenced by your search activity on Google last December.
Here’s some of the more unusual/unpredictable/crazy holiday searches I found:

How to tell parents I’m single (60 searches.)
How to force yourself to eat something you hate (68 searches)
Cat proofing Christmas tree (4,400 searches)
Snow on Christmas day odds (20 searches)
Is eggnog good for you? (880 searches)
Avoiding politics at dinner (50 searches…We predict a big increase on this one this season.)
How long to leave Christmas lights up (400 searches)
Can Christmas lights catch curtains on fire? (480 searches… Why only curtains?)
Legend of the Christmas spider (720 searches)
I’ll be honest…I was curious and searched a few of these things myself. Spoiler alert: Eggnog is not good for you and you really should take your Christmas lights down before Easter (preferably sooner).
What’s the lesson here?
As silly as it sounds, people search for a lot more than you’d think. Whether it’s a bet or curiosity or actual necessity, people use search for questions that keep them up at night—practical or not. Want to get people to your website? Answer those burning questions directly.
If someone is asking if eggnog is good for you, and your product just so happens to be a perfectly tasty alternative, be there! Answer that question! Because if your search strategy and SEO is only set up for “holiday drink recipes,” you may be overlooked.
